# Rate Limits (/docs/rate-limits)



Requests sharing an API key share a rate limit. When it is exceeded, the API
returns `429 Too Many Requests` with code `RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED`.

## When a request is limited [#when-a-request-is-limited]

Reduce concurrent requests and wait before trying again. Follow `Retry-After`
when the response includes it. The SDK retries `429` responses automatically
unless retries are disabled.

For large imports, use a queue with limited concurrency instead of sending every
request at once. See [retries and recovery](/docs/retries) before retrying writes.
